Reading, writing & poetry workshops for your school

Our aim at Tween the Lines is to enthuse children with a lifelong passion for reading and writing. We achieve this by helping them discover the power of words, unleashing imaginations, encouraging creativity and boosting confidence. Based in Cobham, Tween the Lines visits schools throughout the South East, delivering engaging workshops to children aged 7-13.

Run by a team with backgrounds in education, Tween the Lines inspires children of all abilities – from reaching the most reluctant readers and giving confidence to children who struggle to write a paragraph to fuelling the imaginations of the most able children.

Whether you want us to focus on reading, writing or poetry, we will tailor the workshop according to the age of your pupils and your specific requirements to complement and enhance your teaching. We also run A Book in a Term, an after-school reading club.

A Book in a Term after-school club

Duration:

One hour per week after school

Capacity:

Up to 15 children

Suitable for:

Years 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and 7 & 8

This after-school club is designed to inspire a love of reading. The novels we use are age appropriate and chosen for their gripping storylines and quality of writing.

With an emphasis on reading for pleasure, we’ll explore a novel over the course of a term. Role play, games and discussion are just some of the fun and stimulating ways in which the story will be brought to life. We’ll explore inferred meaning in the text by unpacking language, as well as looking at the writer’s craft, and children will develop their comprehension skills and enlarge their vocabulary. This will also help them generally in their school work and future exams.

Tween the Lines currently runs A Book in a Term after-school clubs in a number of Surrey schools, including Feltonfleet Preparatory School, Aberdour School, Weston Green School, Kingswood House School and St Andrew’s C of E Primary School, Cobham.

What they say
‍

“Andy worked with both our Year 5 and 6 classes: it was a very informative session, which inspired the children's writing. His 'ten top tips for narrative writing' is a great tool for children to use. After the workshop the children were very keen to put their new skills to the test and they all wrote some wonderful short stories. We would certainly want to invite Andy back again next year!”
Kate Pinhey, Deputy Head, Weston Green School

“The creative writing workshop was amazing - it was interesting and I really enjoyed writing the story after watching the video.”
Pippa, Year 4

“It was brilliant because it was fun but we also got to learn very important skills, like keeping your story simple!”
Eva, Year 6

Pleasure in Poetry Workshop

Duration: Half day or full day
Capacity: Flexible
Suitable for: KS2 & KS3 years 7-8

Mention the word ‘poetry’ and you’ll probably be greeted with a chorus of groans. Children often struggle with poetry and yet they will need an understanding of it throughout their school life. There is also much to be gained from appreciating poetry just as there is pleasure to be had from reading prose. At Tween the Lines we are determined to break down the barriers to enjoying poetry and this workshop aims to make it truly accessible for children.

Using a variety of poems, we’ll explore subject, tone, imagery and form in a dynamic and engaging way. The content of the workshops can be tailored around a particular theme, such as World War One, if required or we can focus on a particular aspect of poetry.

Based on what they discover throughout the day, the children will then have the opportunity to produce their own poems – a fun and liberating experience for those who claim to hate poetry!
